Amb. Gabriel O. Egbe was born on 25th March 1965 in a rural community of Okpenehi-Yahe, in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. He was born into the family of Late Elder Joseph Okala Egbe, a renowned farmer and traditional musician, and Madam Lucy Iyaji Onah [Nee Egbe], a resilient and devoted mother. Growing up in a polygamous family of modest means, his early life was shaped by hardship, discipline, and strong cultural values.
Despite the challenges of poverty and limited access to resources, young Gabriel displayed an extraordinary passion for education. His determination to learn distinguishes him among his peers from an early age. He began his primary education at St. Stephen’s Primary School, Okpenehi, and later completed it at St. John’s Primary School, Yahe where he sat fir and obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (1979). He proceeded to Yala Secondary Commercial School, Okpoma, where he demonstrated academic excellence and leadership potential. In 1984 he successfully wrote the West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE) and came out with flying colour.
Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, he advanced to the Federal School of Arts and Science, Ogoja for a Higher School Certificate. This dream was cut short when he gained admission into the University of Calabar, to study Education (Political Science), where he graduated in 1992 with B.Ed. at Second Class Upper Division. He later enrolled and got a Master’s Degree (M.Ed.) in 1995 and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2025.
Chief Egbe began his career in public service at the Ibrahim Babangida College of Agriculture now College of Agriculture and Technology, Obubra, where he served as Administrative officer/Special Assistant to the Rector. He later transferred his service to the University of Calabar his alma mater to further his career. In November 2019, he was appointed the 7th Registrar of the University of Calabar, through a highly competitive process. He assumed the office fully prepared for the job having outlined his agenda in his manifesto. His score card speaks for itself. With a sound integrity base and a well articulated vision, he held the position with distinction, earning recognition as a reform-driven and principled administrator. He is celebrated for leading the process to sanitize the university administration through continuing digitalization of the registry activities, unbundling of the registry to upgrade service delivery, strict enforcement of work ethics, introduction of Registry annual lecture series etc.
In 2025, Amb. Gabriel O. Egbe was appointed the Pioneer Registrar of the University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa. This historic appointment reflects confidence in his administrative expertise, visionary leadership, and capacity to build strong institutional frameworks from inception. As Pioneer Registrar, he is entrusted with laying a solid administrative foundation for the university, guided by principles of excellence, discipline, and innovation. These, he is carrying out with absolute commitment to the admiration of the State and his Principal.

Beyond the university environment, Amb. Egbe is deeply committed to community development and humanitarian service. He is the founder of the Centre for Development and Counselling Services (CEDECOS), a non-governmental organization that focuses on supporting the less privileged, providing educational, vocational and personal-social counselling services, promoting social welfare and development and empowering the vulnerable population.
He has also contributed significantly to rural development through electrification projects in his community and its neighborhood, infrastructure supports, including culverts, school renovations and community access improvements. He has also provided educational support through distribution of customized notebooks and textbooks to primary and secondary school students in his local government, among other mentorship programs.
Amb. Egbe has facilitated admission for youths across the country. His philanthropic work has positively impacted countless lives across Cross River State and beyond. He has served as external Accessor for the appointments of six Registrars in different institutions of higher learning. A seasoned public speaker, he has delivered public lectures across diverse fora. He gained prominence for his controversial, yet thought-provoking call for the abolition of mobile phones in secondary schools, arguing that, it will revive reading culture among Nigerian youth. Additionally, as an advocate of educational reform in Nigeria, he has championed reforms in higher education notably, advocating for a democratic selection process for Vice-Chancellors in Nigerian universities, one that empowers staff to elect leaders with a strong track record of competence, honesty and integrity among others.
Chief Egbe had served as a member of the board of the West African Examination council (WAEC), Chairman of the Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators (ANUPA), Unical branch and member of the University of Calabar Governing Council, representing Congregation. He belongs to so many professional bodies. As at the last count, Amb. Gabriel Egbe is a member of six professional bodies, a recipient of 68 awards from different Organizations and co-operate entities.

Amb. (Chief) Gabriel O. Egbe PhD is happily married to Mrs. Charity Egbe, and their marriage is blessed with five children, one Medical Doctor, one Lawyer and a Nurse, with two others still in school. He is a devoted family man, a man of faith, and a committed member of the Roman Catholic Church.
