WHERE IGNORANCE STRUGGLES WITH TRENDING REALITIES: THE UEE SIDE-TALK.
Gabriel O. Egbe Ph.D. | Registrar, UEE, Akamkpa
Sometimes, when you hear stories from some quarters concerning the true mandate of the University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa, one begin to wonder why people should allow their ignorance to overshadow their sense of objective reasoning. It is even more worrisome when such narratives emanate from individuals who are supposed to educate others on the mission and vision our university. Nevertheless, It is still important to address and correct such misconceptions so that the gullible public would not be led astray. I am talking particularly about the information carried by some individuals regarding the University’s mandate, philosophy, and academic structure.
Let me remind us that UEE is a fully recognized institution operating strictly within the regulatory framework of the National Universities Commission (NUC). All its academic programmes are developed, reviewed, and implemented in full compliance with NUC guidelines and Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards. The university does not operate any curriculum outside approved regulatory provisions.
It is very funny when you hear people calling for another curriculum for the university. Yet others are ignorantly saying that UEE students, upon admission are supposed to be primarily engaged in manual or artisan activities as a core academic requirement This perception is not only incorrect, but a misrepresentation of the University’s academic model.
At UEE, we offer rigorous and competitive academic programmes comparable to those of any other accredited university in the world. What distinguishes the institution, however, is its deliberate integration of entrepreneurship and innovation into the learning process.
All students, irrespective of their discipline, be it Nursing, Physiotherapy, Public Health, Management Sciences, Education, and other disciplines, are required to undertake structured entrepreneurial ventures alongside their academic studies. This approach is designed not to replace theoretical learning but to complement it with practical, value-driven skills.
The objective is to produce well-rounded graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped to create job opportunities, drive innovation, and contribute meaningfully to economic and societal development. UEE is, therefore, committed to producing job creators rather than job seekers.
This model aligns with the UNESCO model and. global best practices. We are not doing anything different from what obtains in other higher education, where entrepreneurship, innovation, and self-reliance are essential competencies for success in the modern world.
As Management, we call on stakeholders to always educate members of the public on our core mandate and to support our ongoing efforts at promoting a clear understanding of our mission and vision.
UEE remains steadfast in its commitment to academic excellence, regulatory compliance, and the development of graduates capable of driving national growth and transformation.
